Procedure Modifier Codes

Updated: 01/12/2022

Procedure modifiers are used within the healthcare industry to identify specific modifiers to medical procedures or other services provided to patients. These codes correspond with the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes.  You can edit the existing procedure modifier name or create new custom codes for any unlisted ones.

Important Note: Procedure modifiers are not practice specific and are shared across all practices within the Kareo account. Any additions or modifications will affect the entire Kareo account and all practices associated with it.

You always begin with finding the procedure modifier before creating or editing a procedure modifier.

Find Procedure Modifier

  1. On the top menu bar, click Settings > Codes > Find Procedure Modifiers. The Find Procedure Modifier window opens.
  2. Enter all or part of a keyword of the procedure modifier in the Look For search box. Then, click Find Now and the search results are listed.

New Procedure Modifier

Note: Once a new procedure modifier is created, it cannot be deleted and only the name can be edited.

  1. To prevent duplication, verify the procedure modifier is not in the system then click New at the bottom. The New Procedure Modifier window opens.
  2. Enter the information.
    • Code: The code for the procedure modifier.
Note: Once the procedure modifier is saved, the code entered cannot be edited.
    • Name: The name for the procedure modifier.
  3. Click Save. Repeat the steps for any additional new procedure modifiers.
  4. Once finished, log out and back into Kareo to use the new procedure modifier(s).
